AI Surveillance Towers Fail to Prevent Death at US-Mexico Border

AI-enabled surveillance towers at the US-Mexico border failed to prevent the death of a migrant crossing in April 2024, raising questions about the technology's effectiveness.

José Morales Bernal, a 32-year-old migrant, crossed the US border into southern New Mexico on April 8, 2024, within the range of three newly installed AI-enabled surveillance towers. According to MIT Technology Review, these towers were built by defense technology firm Anduril and designed to detect and track individuals using cameras and artificial intelligence.

The towers transmit live video feeds and send real-time alerts to US Customs and Border Protection agents via government-issued smartphones. Despite this advanced technology, the system failed to prevent Bernal's death near the border, raising concerns over the effectiveness of AI surveillance in high-risk areas.
