An independent review by the Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute has rated OpenAI's ChatGPT as an unacceptable risk for teenage users. According to The Decoder, the audit tested over 4,000 prompts and found that conversations involving suicide and self-harm failed to trigger any parental alerts.

The institute’s findings highlight significant safety gaps, especially in sensitive discussions, prompting a recommendation to restrict teen access to ChatGPT until its safety measures can be independently verified. The Decoder reported that none of the test accounts activated parental warnings during these critical conversations.

This development raises concerns for AI adoption in Japan’s tech markets, where regulatory scrutiny over AI safety and youth protection is increasing amid growing AI integration in education and entertainment sectors.
