Bytedance’s AI-powered video tool, Seedance, has sparked controversy in Hollywood after the Motion Picture Association (MPA) issued a cease-and-desist order against it. This marks the MPA’s first-ever legal action targeting an AI company, reportedly triggered by a viral clip featuring AI-generated likenesses of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, according to The Decoder.
Despite the formal warning, studios appear to continue using Seedance discreetly. Joel Kuwahara, a producer for The Simpsons animation, revealed to The Decoder that the tool is employed on a 'don’t ask, don’t tell' basis, highlighting the tension between innovation and legal constraints in the entertainment industry.
For Japanese investors and markets, this development underscores the growing impact of AI technologies on content creation and intellectual property rights, areas increasingly relevant as Japan’s media sector explores AI integration while navigating regulatory challenges.
