Google is advancing its Suncatcher project to deploy a solar-powered AI data center satellite into orbit, according to The Decoder. The initiative aims to run AI infrastructure off Earth using clean solar energy, marking a significant step in space-based computing technology.
An experimental, fridge-sized satellite is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on October 1, The Decoder reported. However, to match the power output of a single 1-gigawatt terrestrial data center, the project would require approximately 10,000 such satellites in orbit.
Jeff Bezos has expressed skepticism about the timeline, suggesting it could take up to 20 years before orbital data centers become more cost-effective than their ground-based counterparts.
