OpenAI’s GPT-4 maintained the top position on the Epoch Capabilities Index for about one year, according to The Decoder. This long-standing lead reflected its strong performance in the evolving AI landscape.

However, since Claude 3 Opus claimed the number one spot in February 2024, the ranking has seen significant volatility. The lead has changed hands 17 times, with each leader holding the top position for a median duration of just seven weeks, The Decoder reported.

For Japanese investors and tech markets, these rapid shifts in AI capabilities rankings highlight the accelerating pace of innovation and competition, which could impact technology valuations and strategic positioning in both equities and crypto sectors.
