Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) has appointed active domestic bond managers for the first time in five years, aiming to enhance expertise and diversify its holdings amid instability in the Japanese Government Bond (JGB) markets, according to FX Street.
Despite achieving strong overall returns, the fund’s domestic bond portfolio has experienced losses, prompting this strategic shift. Geoff Yu of BNY noted that the move is designed to better navigate the volatile JGB environment through improved management and diversification.
This development comes as Japan’s bond market faces ongoing volatility influenced by shifts in monetary policy and global economic factors, underscoring the importance of adaptive investment strategies for major institutional investors like GPIF.
