US companies notably increased their reliance on Chinese AI services in June after Anthropic suspended some of its models due to government restrictions, according to KrASIA. This shift allowed firms to significantly reduce their AI expenses.
Coinbase, a leading crypto exchange, moved much of its AI workload to Chinese models GLM and Kimi, which cost roughly one-twentieth of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos price. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed on June 27 that these changes have nearly halved the company’s AI spending.
For Japanese markets, this trend highlights growing cost pressures and strategic shifts in AI adoption that could influence domestic and regional tech investments, especially in crypto and FX sectors.
