German media regulators have ruled that AI-generated overviews by Google and Perplexity fall under the country’s State Media Treaty. According to The Decoder, these summaries are considered Google's own content rather than neutral search results, as they tend to overshadow traditional links.

This marks the first time the regulators have applied the State Media Treaty to AI services, issuing rulings against both Google and Perplexity. The companies have been given one month to file an appeal, according to the report.

The decision highlights growing regulatory scrutiny over AI-generated information, a trend that could influence how Japanese markets approach AI content governance in FX, crypto, and equities sectors.
