Microsoft is transitioning from using AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic to its own proprietary MAI models in products such as Excel and Outlook, according to The Decoder. This strategic move aims to reduce the expenses associated with relying on external AI services.

The Decoder reports that already tens of thousands of queries per week are processed through Microsoft’s MAI models. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI chief, has expressed a goal to eventually eliminate the costs linked to external AI providers entirely.

This shift highlights a broader trend in tech companies seeking to internalize AI capabilities, a development that Japanese enterprises and investors should watch closely as it may influence AI adoption and cost structures in the region’s competitive markets.
