OpenAI has intervened to shut down a covert Russian influence operation that utilized ChatGPT to create pro-Kremlin social media posts, according to The Decoder. The campaign promoted a fabricated entity called the International Burke Institute and distributed German-language content on Telegram critical of the EU and the German government.
The operators reportedly accessed ChatGPT through VPNs based in Russia to mask their activity. While the campaign's current reach remained limited, The Decoder noted it had the potential to expand significantly over time if left unchecked.
