The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has joined the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in putting forward proposals to regulate the cryptocurrency market. Both agencies aim to establish clearer oversight frameworks to address risks inherent in crypto trading and investment, according to CoinDesk.

Despite these efforts, a regulatory gap persists for spot-market crypto assets, which remain largely outside the scope of the proposed rules. This leaves a significant portion of the crypto ecosystem less regulated compared to derivatives and securities-linked products.

For Japanese investors and market participants, these developments highlight ongoing challenges in global crypto regulation, potentially influencing Japan’s own regulatory stance and the behavior of international crypto exchanges operating in the region.
